The regional transport office of the Dehradun division collected a revenue of Rs 14.01 crore by imposing penalties on 82,108 vehicles in the past 10 months. The Transport department had imposed challan on a total of 46,846 vehicles from January to October last year and recovered a revenue of Rs 10.52 crore. This year, the number of challans imposed on vehicles by the department is 75.27 per cent more than the last year. Besides this, the department also witnessed a 33.08 per cent rise in penalty collection compared to last year, said the regional transport officer (Enforcement) Shailesh Tiwari. He said that these challans were imposed in districts that fall under the Dehradun division of the transport office- Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Uttarkashi. He said that from January to October last year, the enforcement team had imposed challan on 25,088 vehicles in Dehradun, 17,537 vehicles in Haridwar, 1,951 vehicles in Tehri and 2,270 in Uttarkashi. Tiwari said that the number of challans issued this year is almost twice that of last year as the enforcement team increased the number of checking campaigns at all levels. In 2023, the department imposed 41,592 challans in Dehradun, 34,172 challans in Haridwar, 2,487 challans in Tehri and 3,857 in Uttarkashi. He said that though the number of challans imposed in Dehradun is more than in Haridwar, the department received more revenue collection of challan from the latter. There is a 65.78 per cent increase in revenue collection of challans from Dehradun and a 94.85 per cent increase in revenue collection of challans from Haridwar this year. Tiwari said that the department this year focussed more on traffic violations like riding without helmets and vehicles carrying school students illicitly. He said that the department in the four districts that fall under the Dehradun division has issued a challan to over 14,000 two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets since January this year. He said that the department also acted against several school vehicles by imposing penalties under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act for violations. Besides this, several public transport vehicles like Vikrams, electric rickshaws and auto rickshaws were also penalised for carrying school students against the rules. He said that the department has completed the verification process of over 620 school vehicles including buses and vans in Dehradun in the past two months. Besides this, several drivers are also being trained regularly to ensure they drive cautiously while carrying students and can take all possible measures for their safety if needed, added Tiwari. He said that considering the number of schools in Dehradun, the training session is being provided only to the school bus and van drivers here but soon such drivers in other districts will also be trained by the department as per the guidelines of the department. The officials concerned will soon approach the management of all schools and local drivers to seek their cooperation in this regard to ensure children’s safety, especially in urban areas.
