The shortfall in the availability of coal and steep increase in the demand of power is continuing to take toll on the power situation in Uttarakhand. On May 3 the state would have an estimated demand of 45.84 MUs of electricity against which the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) would be able to provide 34.05 MU of power. This shortfall of 11.79 MU could reflect in power outages in some parts of the state. However the UPCL has claimed that the situation of the power availability would be kept normal. On Monday the Managing Director (MD) of UPCL Anil Kumar again requested the people and heads of government and other offices to use the available power judiciously. He said that the power should not be wasted and efforts to reduce its wasteful expenditure should be made. The MD said that there is a minimal rostering in Uttarakhand in comparison to other states. The UPCL claimed that while there is a roster of seven to eight hours in many states, Uttarakhand is free from rostering.
