Snowless winter dampens tourism trade in Auli

Tuesday, 30 January 2024 | PNS | JOSHIMATH

With the renowned skiing destination Auli in Chamoli district grappling with snowless winter, those associated with the tourism trade are staring at huge losses. To deepen their despair, the snow accumulated there has completely melted now, making the tourists, who are thronging the place, return in disappointment.

The traders said that they had hoped for a good amount of snowfall this season given last year’s scanty snowfall. “But this season, things have gone worse as this is a nearly snowless winter we are grappling with. With little likelihood of snowfall in the remainder of the winter season, we have resigned to our plight of incurring losses,” said a hotelier.

“Even the Himalayan peaks are snowless this season.  Our hearts lifted up a little after Gaurso around Auli recorded snowfall. Tourists started coming, but then things changed for the worse and the tourist footfall almost stopped. We are at the receiving end of the tourists turning back on this famed tourist spot,” said another tourism trader Santosh Kunwar
