RTO suggests bus depot to minimise overloading in Chakrata

In order to prevent overloading of vehicles in the remote areas of Chakrata Tehsil, the regional transport office (RTO) of Dehradun has proposed that the transport department establish a bus depot for the operation of at least 25 buses in the area.

The regional transport officers Dinesh Pathoi and Sandeep Saini mentioned this in their report to the department in which they also mentioned technical reasons for the accident that occurred on October 31 in Chakrata. The report claims that the lack of public transport vehicles in the remote areas of Chakrata is the main cause for overloading in the area. Since most of the buses of Uttarakhand transport corporation (UTC) and other vehicles go through the plain areas of the Dehradun district, the locals use utility vehicles to travel.

The RTOs also mentioned that the accident possibly happened due to the negligence of the driver as the turn near the accident site is wide enough but the vehicle still fell into a gorge breaking the parapet. The officials recommended that the department establish a bus depot in the area to facilitate the operation of 25 buses on the internal routes.

They also said that since the operation of vehicles on these routes is mostly not profitable, the department can provide a considerable subsidy on the taxes to motivate private operators to run their vehicles. The deputy transport commissioner Sanat Singh said that the department is considering all recommendations and will soon provide the maximum subsidy possible to improve transportation on these routes.
