The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will start sending bills and notices to 7,000 defaulters of non-residential property tax from Monday. All these defaulters are those who have to pay the proper tax of Rs 50,000 or less for non-residential properties, said the Dehradun municipal tax superintendent Dharmesh Painuly. He said that the tax section had sent bills and notices to non-residential property tax defaulters of above Rs 50,000 in April this year. In the past eight months, the tax section has sent 15,000 bills for property tax submission most of which include non-residential property owners. Painuly said that residential property owners submit their property tax regularly compared to non-residential property owners due to which, the Corporation is focusing on tax collection from such property owners.

On the question of the status of tax collection from government, semi-government and aided organisations, he said that MCD has been receiving tax from such organisations regularly since April. “We recently received property tax of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital of about Rs 1.34 crore besides Rs 1.75 crore property tax from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Limited. Similarly, we have been receiving taxes from various departmental buildings. Since the tax submission process usually speeds up from January, we expect to get huge amounts of tax from next month,” said Painuly. He said that the corporation will also set up camps if the tax section thinks people of certain areas require them. According to him, the corporation has so far collected over Rs 35 crore against the target of collecting Rs 70 crore in the current financial year. He said that MCD collected property tax of over Rs 52 crore in the last financial year and they are optimistic that they can achieve the target to collect Rs 70 crore by the end of this financial year.
