The chairperson of State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Geeta Khanna said that the commission has demanded that the Education department and State government should implement rules and regulations for the operation of coaching institutes. She said this while addressing a press conference here on Thursday.

Khanna informed that coaching institutes also pose issues related to the protection and rights of children across the State. Some of these institutes fail to adhere to their legal obligations during inspections. To counter such activities that could endanger children, the commission has asked linear departments to establish necessary regulations and laws for the operation of coaching institutes, she added.

Additionally, she claimed that some schools were exploiting children and called for increased vigilance by the Education department. Commenting about the works done by the commission in two years of her tenure so far, Khanna said, “The commission has organised multiple awareness programmes across the State to educate people about child rights. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has been overseeing these programmes. Further, this year, the commission’s main focus is to raise awareness about cybercrime and its detrimental effects on children. As part of this initiative, a workshop on cybercrime was recently held in Doon, where attendees were informed about the police department’s efforts to combat cybercrime and assured of the commission’s support in providing any necessary assistance.”

She further said that in April the commission organised a meeting with Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department to discuss the preparations and guidelines for ensuring the safety of children in the State during disasters like earthquakes, landslides and fires. The chairperson of the commission stressed that their objective is to protect the rights of children, prevent their exploitation at the State level and prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
