The numbers of accidents in the provisional state capital Dehradun are on an increase. The data clearly shows that the numbers of accidents each year are increasing in Dehradun and nearby areas. This increasing number is an alarming sign for the city and a cause of worry for its dwellers. Experts point out that rash driving and lack of traffic sense are responsible for the spurt in accident cases.
People are in such a hurry that they do not look left or right before driving. The public transport services like city buses and Vikrams also paint a similar pathetic picture. It is common for the City buses and Vikrams to stop in the middle of the road in order to pick and drop the passengers. Apart from causing traffic snarls this habit is one of the reasons for the accidents.
Experts point out that unnecessary honking at traffic signals and other places clearly shows utter lack of civic and traffic sense. The increase in number of vehicles and lack of parking space cause traffic snarls.
Social activist and independent director of Dehradun Smart City limited Lokesh Ohri said, “Both public and management are responsible for the increasing traffic and accidents. Promotion of the auto industry is one of the reasons for the current situation. People are not focusing on cycling or taking public transport. This is increasing the vehicle population. He said that with city buses, roadways, Vikrams, auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws and e-buses running on the road, the traffic is increasing; therefore with the introduction of new public transport systems, old public transport should be phased out.’’
He added that under the smart city project of broadening the roads, cycling tracks should also be included.
