Police nab two inter-state gang members for currency fraud

Wednesday, 29 December 2021 | PNS | Dehradun

The Dehradun police have arrested two members of an inter-state gang which allegedly cons people by offering them Saudi Arabia’s currency Riyal in exchange for Indian rupees at a cheaper rate. The police informed that 10 cases in Delhi NCR and 15 cases in Mumbai are also registered against both gang members- 36-year old Jabbar from West Bengal and 25-year-old Ripa from Delhi along with other gang members. The police have recovered 42 sim cards, 14 keypad mobiles of different companies, Rs 1.08 lakh in cash and five notes of 50 Riyals each from the culprits.

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and senior superintendent of police (SSP) Janmejaya Khanduri informed that two cases were registered in the police stations of Patelnagar and Premnagar against the gang. He said, “The complainants informed the police that a woman approached them and offered them some Riyals for a very small percentage of her Riyals in Indian currency due to her weak financial condition. When the complainants reached the designated location for the exchange, the woman along with another man took the money, handed them a stack of newspapers inside a bag and ran away.” The police started the investigation by reviewing over 100 CCTV footages and finally nabbed both culprits from Patelnagar. The SSP said that police are looking into the criminal history of the culprits but some of the gang members can still be in the city. “The culprits revealed that they have a group of seven-eight people who duped others with the same modus operandi. They have also confessed to duping other people in the city but the police have received only two complaints so far.  The police will gather more details about them and contact the police of other states too. We are also looking whether any local person was involved with the gang too,” said Khanduri. He also appealed to the public to approach the police in such cases rather than considering getting some quick money as it can lead to such crimes.
