The Haridwar police on Tuesday booked 193 people along with some officials for allegedly orchestrating irregularities in the Nanda Gaura Yojana in Haridwar district to benefit from the scheme. They were booked on the orders of the Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) minister Rekha Arya.  The officials said that the police have imposed various relevant sections on all accused including section 420 of IPC for tampering with documents to be the beneficiaries of the scheme.

The police took this action after the WECD minister on Friday issued the order to register a case against those parents who tried to be eligible to get benefits for their daughters by snatching the rights of eligible girls. In the year 2022-23, Haridwar district received a total of 1,328 applications for new born females and 4,174 applications for those girls who have cleared class XII under the scheme. It came to light during the verification process of the district administration that total 193 applicants including 70 out of 1,328 applicants and 123 out of 4,174 applicants have tampered with the income certificate which is one of the mandatory documents to be a beneficiary of the scheme.

Besides the applicants, Arya also directed the department to register a case against the officials allegedly involved in assisting such applicants in forging the documents. Under the Nanda Gaura Yojana, eligible parents receive Rs 11,000 at the time of birth of the girl child from the WECD department. Later, the girl child receives Rs 51,000 on clearing class XII. Arya said that the government provides such benefits under this scheme to ensure girls of underprivileged families get assistance but such fraud by some parents to be the beneficiaries is shameful and they must face consequences along with the officials allegedly involved with them.
