After his crushing defeat the former chief minister and head of the campaign committee of Uttarakhand Congress, Harish Rawat sought forgiveness from the people of Lalkuan for not being able to win their confidence in the election. Displaying humility after defeat in what could well be the last electoral battle in his long and illustrious political career spanning more than five decades, Rawat said that having failed to win the hearts of the people of Lalkuan area which includes Bindukhatta and Bareilly Road he will not be able to fulfill the promises he made to the people of the area. “In a very short time I tried to extend my hand of affection towards you but I failed to bring you within the reach of my hand. The workers of the Congress party worked hard to cover my weaknesses and tried to connect me with the people. I am thankful to all these workers,’’ he wrote on his Facebook wall. Rawat added that he will soon be among the people of Lalkuan for expressing his gratitude. He also termed his rival Mohan Singh Bisht a better representative than him and congratulated him for his victory.

It is worth mentioning here that Harish Rawat wanted to contest from Ramnagar assembly segment and was nominated from there by the party. However, after a stiff resistance from working president of Uttarakhand Congress Ranjit Rawat, the party high command asked him to contest from the Lalkuan assembly. Ranjit Rawat was shifted to Salt and Mahendra Singh Pal was nominated by Congress party to contest from Ramnagar. Incidentally all the three, Harish Rawat, Ranjit Rawat and Pal lost the elections to their BJP counterparts.
