While there are more than 35,000 illiterate people in Dehradun district as per the recent survey conducted by the district administration, the number of volunteers registered on the website of Dehradun Smart City Limited (DSCL) has not even reached 100 yet. Under Padho Doon Badho Doon campaign, the district administration is planning to eradicate illiteracy from Dehradun district by January 26. In order to achieve this goal by involving the residents of the district, the administration had asked people to volunteer to educate the illiterate people including more than 300 young girls aged 11 years to 14 years. Surprisingly, however, only about 50 volunteers have registered on the DSCL website so far.

Clarifying the situation about low volunteer registrations for over a month, the officials stated that there was a technical glitch in the web portal due to which several people could not register their names as volunteers for the literacy campaign. However, as per the officials, the issue is sorted and the administration is receiving the registration from the volunteers.

Meanwhile, the officials also agreed that lack of advertising and publicity of the campaign among locals might also be the reason for less registration and the administration is working on it. It is pertinent to mention here that any educated person can volunteer and adjust the classes as per their daily schedule. Besides, the volunteer has the freedom to choose the area where they want to take classes and the administration will provide them space in a school in that area. Those who can give at least 25 hours to five illiterate people in any area of the district can register themselves at http://dsclservices.org.in/volunteer.php.
