MCD plans to penalise owners of unregistered dairies

Dairy Act implemented in Dehradun, dairy owners given three months time to register themselves

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will start penalising dairy owners from next year who would fail to register their dairies with the corporation within three months. The local dairy owners cause several sanitation issues in the city like dumping cow dung in drains, in various stretches of Rispana River and in other public areas.

The city also faces issues like water-logging during monsoon season besides potential health risks and environmental concerns like methane emission due to improper disposal of cow dung in large quantities by big dairies. Many also leave their cattle on roads after they become too old to give milk or get sick which was quite evident in the recent months when many cattle suffered from Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) and were left on streets by their owners rather than providing them proper treatment. Such stray cattle often lead to traffic issues and road accidents in several parts of the city. Many councillors had complained about such issues to the senior MCD officials on various occasions but they could take action only against a few since there was no specific data about all the dairies operating in the city.

Now the MCD has implemented the dairy act in Dehradun according to which, it would be mandatory for dairy owners to register their establishment under the corporation. The senior veterinary municipal officer Dr DC Tiwari said that the dairy owners would have to register with the corporation within three months or MCD would impose a penalty up to Rs 25,000 from the year 2023. He said that registration of dairies would help the corporation in coordinating with dairy owners regarding the Bio-CNG plant which is proposed to be established in six to eight months. This would also help the corporation to monitor dairies’ operation and take necessary action in case of any anomalies, added Tiwari.
