The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has collected a penalty of about Rs 30,000 from local shopkeepers and vendors in one week. The chief municipal health officer Kailash Joshi issued an order last week for the sanitation inspectors to impose penalties on the offenders.

Since then, the health section of the corporation has penalised over 50 people and has seized about 20 kilogrammes of single-use plastic. The sanitation inspector Rajbeer Chauhan said, “The three teams of sanitation inspectors are conducting regular inspections in their respective areas on the days allotted to them as per the orders. For now, we are mainly focusing on penalising local vendors and shopkeepers who use single-use plastics on regular basis.

We have collected over Rs 30,000 penalties by penalising over 50 people in one week.” He added, “We are also running awareness campaigns and warning people to not repeat the offence again. If we find a shopkeeper to be using single-use plastic again, we will impose hefty fines besides taking strict action under the relevant acts.”
