The Jyotish Peeth Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati has written to the President Droupadi Murmu expressing concern at the land subsidence in Joshimath. He has requested the President to intervene in order to save the religious and historical city in the Chamoli district. The seer has also demanded that a survey of all residential buildings should be conducted in Joshimath and that the affected families should be rehabilitated.

In a statement issued to the media on Saturday, the Jyotirmath spokesman Brijesh Sati has stated that the Shankaracharya has written to the President expressing concern at the continued land subsidence in Joshimath. In the letter addressed to the President, the seer said that Jyotirmath is one of the four Math established by Adi Shankaracharya and also a prominent support of Badrinath. The lives of the people have been distrutbed due to land subsidence in the city inhabited by more than 20,000 people, he said. In addition to the President, the Saraswati has also sent letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttarakhand governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and the Disaster Management minister.

It is pertinent to mention here that land subsidence is being experienced consistently in Sunil, Swi, Manoharbagh, Gandhinagar, Ravigram and other localities of Joshimath. While the residents of the affected areas are living in anxiety, they are dissatisfied with the authorities for not taking any concrete measures so far to address the situation. Residents in some of the affected areas are living in homes with cracks while also fearing for their lives. Joshimath in Chamoli district is important not only due to its proximity to the Indo-Tibet border but also as it is the last major town on the routes to Badrinath, Valley of Flowers and Hemkund.
