The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) chairperson, Kusum Kandwal asked the senior superintendent of police, Haridwar, Pramendra Dobhal to take strict action on an alleged rape and assault case involving a woman in Haridwar district.

Kandwal had initiated suo moto proceedings about the reported case involving a factory worker from Pathri in SIIDCUL area who was accused of assaulting a widow by pouring chili powder in her eyes.

“As per the reports, the victim’s brother claimed that Rajat, a resident of Pathri in Haridwar, who had previously harassed their sister, lured her into his room and subsequently raped her. As she resisted, he allegedly attacked her with an iron rod and other sharp objects after blinding her with chili powder, causing severe injuries to her eyes. The victim was then taken to AIIMS Rishikesh,” she said.

She further said that she had gathered information regarding the case from SP City, Pankaj Gairola. “He informed me that the accused has been charged under several sections of the law with the police hunting down for the accused,” she added.

“This is good but the alleged perpetrator must be arrested at the earliest. We demand the most stringent punishment for such criminals. Besides, the government should expedite trials against such offenders in fast-track courts,” she affirmed.

She further said that she had a telephonic conversation with the director of AIIMS, Rishikesh, Dr Meenu Singh to ensure appropriate medical care for the victim.
