The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is preparing to impose penalties on the defaulters who failed to deposit the property tax by March 31. With the end of the last financial year, the corporation received over Rs 35 crore revenue in property tax. As per the officials, the registration of the properties actually increased this year but it still could not help the corporation to achieve the set target of Rs 50 crore. It is because most of the newly registered buildings were residential and many even converted their commercial properties to the residential buildings owing to the loss occurred due to Covid-19 pandemic, informed the officials.

The property tax collection is a major source of income for the municipal corporation, especially the tax collection from the commercial properties. However, many commercial establishments have not deposited the property tax including about 90 Government, non-government and aided organisations which is due for over two years. The properties with the maximum pending property tax in the city include SIIDCUL with Rs 1.77 crore, Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) with about Rs 90 lakh and the secretariat with Rs 68 lakh among others. The tax section of MCD has sent bills to such organisations multiple times in the last two years for the pending property tax which is about Rs 15 crore but failed to recover even 50 per cent of the due taxes. According to the municipal commissioner, Vinay Shankar Pandey, the tax section of the corporation is currently working on the compilation of the data related to the property tax. The corporation would soon start preparing the list of the defaulters and commence the process of imposing the penalties after April 15, stated Pandey.
