The growth of an individual depends on locomotion, which is important in every stage of life. Padma Shri awardee orthopaedic surgeon Dr BKS Sanjay said this while delivering the Dr SC Gaur Oration during Platescon 2022 in Allahabad Medical Association Convention Centre Prayagraj.
He said, “The health of the limbs is as important as that of the heart. According to the 2011 census 20 per cent of disabilities are the locomotor disabilities. Though polio, club foot and CP are main causes of deformities, road traffic accidents are causing more deformities in recent years. Any type of disability causes not only physical harm but also mental, economic and social loss. We all need a conducive environment to grow and develop in the existing environment and circumstances but disabled people need more. The needs of people with disabilities are the same as those of a capable person. The correction of deformities should be done as soon as possible,” he said.
Sanjay further said that if the condition of the feet was not good and people were unable to walk they would not have reached the position they are in now. Deformity and disability due to any reason should be rectified as soon as possible because the plants can be straightened easily, not the trees, he added.
