Glass bottles & jute mats launched for Ganga Ghats

Plastic cans for carrying Ganga water and plastic mats will not be used at Har Ki Paidi and adjoining Ganga Ghats in Haridwar. The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) is facilitating glass bottles along with cloth and jute mats through self help groups as alternatives to the plastic items. This initiative was inaugurated by Urban Development minister Prem Chand Agarwal on Monday. He appealed all to boycott plastic items and use the glass and jute alternatives.

Agrawal said that plastic is harmful to the environment as well as human life. The use of single use plastic has been completely banned by the government. Effective steps are being taken by the government to stop the use of such plastic.He said that a good initiative has been taken by MCH to facilitate use of glass bottles along with cloth and jute mats and bags on the Ganga Ghats. This initiative will help in stopping the use of plastic cans and mats on the Ganga Ghats here, he added.

Mayor Anita Sharma said that the municipal corporation has taken a major step through which there will be no use for plastic cans and mats at Har Ki Paidi and the adjoining Ganga Ghats.  Devotees will be able to buy bottles made of glass while cloth and jute mats will be given to them on rent. With this, women self-help groups will also get opportunities for income generation, she added.  

Municipal commissioner Dayanand Saraswati informed that glass bottles covered with jute and mats made of jute have been launched.Other than this, POS machine was also launched which will be used for tax collection. Leader of opposition in MCH Sunil Agarwal, assistant municipal commissioner ML Shah, executive engineer Rachna Payal, tax superintendent Rahul Kainthola, Sunita Saxena and councillors were also present on the occasion.
