Cracks have resurfaced in some parts of Joshimath affected by the land subsidence disaster. After two days of rains in the region, the cracks in the agricultural fields in Manoharbagh ward of Joshimath, which had been filled with soil by the authorities in the past have become visible again. At the same time, the old cracks have reportedly become bigger at some sites in this area. The locals are anxious now with the cracks resurfacing and some of them reportedly becoming larger.

Manoharbagh resident Suraj Kaparwan said that the cracks which had appeared in the past on his farmland have surfaced again. He said that in the past, the authorities had filled these cracks with soil and covered them with plastic. However, in recent days these cracks have become visible again, he said. Kaparwan further added that no new cracks have appeared in new sites so far. At the same time, small cracks have appeared at various sites in Sinhdwar and Marwadi areas.

It is pertinent to mention here that at least 243 families with 878 members have shifted to temporary accommodations and relief camps due to safety concerns resulting from the effects of the subsidence. The authorities are building prefabricated homes for the affected families in two sites. The completion of the prefabricated structures is expected to take some more time. This and other factors have increased the anxiety among the local residents who are demanding swift rehabilitation of the affected families to safer locations.
