A team from the Goods and Services Tax department seized goods from two trucks and caught tax evasion amounting to about Rs one crore.  The team also raided the premises of a firm in Manglaur which was operating only on paper. The office of the firm was found to contain only one chair. The department has started an investigation in the matter.

The joint commissioner of GST special investigation branch Sunita Pandey said that on Thursday, the departmental team stopped two vehicles in Kotdwar.  When the papers of the vehicles were checked, it was found that the vehicles were to go to West Bengal after loading the goods from Manglaur.  When the firm was investigated online, it was found that all the purchases of this firm were from Muzaffarnagar and sales were for West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh. When these two trucks were checked, it was found that these trucks were not tracked on any such route, from where they were slated to carry the goods.  In the investigation conducted till late Thursday evening, at present, tax evasion amounting to Rs 80 lakh to Rs one crore has come to light, prima facie done by a firm registered in Manglaur.  Aa penalty of Rs 10 lakh has been imposed on both the vehicles caught in Kotdwar.

The officials further informed that Manglaur-based Balaji Traders has crores of rupees on paper, but when the GST team reached its registered office, the team found nothing except a table and a chair.  No employee was even present in this office located on the top floor of a house. Seeing the condition of the office made it evident that this office is running only on paper.
