Road Safety Month starts in Dehradun

The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh on Monday inaugurated the 34th Road Safety Month campaign to raise public awareness on road safety and traffic rules. He inaugurated the campaign by flagging off the police bike rally. The rally started from the Police Line and passed through Araghar to East Canal Road, Dilaram Chowk, Clock Tower, Buddha Chowk, Subhash Road, Race Course and then returned to the Police Line.

The police personnel in the rally made the general public aware of road safety and traffic rules through banners and pamphlets. During this one month campaign, the police will raise awareness among every section of the society by conducting training and awareness programmes at various schools, educational institutions and other areas across the district.

“The main aim of this campaign is to make the people realise the importance of road safety measures and traffic rules. We want them to realise how their ignorance and negligence of factors they probably consider to be quite minute can be the cause of fatal accidents and deaths of others,” Singh said. The number of accidents is increasing every year due to a number of reasons but it can be minimised if all follow traffic rules every time they come out on roads and public places. He added that besides road safety, the police will also raise awareness among people regarding helping the injured during an accident.

It is often seen that people refrain from helping the injured on the road which results in delayed medical help which often leads to death. Singh said that this can be prevented if people come forward to help the injured on time to save their lives as the first few minutes are quite precious to save a victim’s life. Police will also encourage people to come forward to help those injured in road accidents under this campaign, the SSP added.
