Citizens continue dumping garbage on roadside in Doon

The menace of roadside garbage accumulation is continuing in various areas of Dehradun. The locals blame incompetent door to door garbage collection service in wards for dumping of garbage in public places by citizens. They expressed their concern that the situation will get worse during summer if the authorities concerned do not take effective action to improve the condition. The whole city turned into a dumping site when the sanitation workers went on strike about two weeks ago. However, the sanitation conditions are still far from perfect in the city despite the consistent claims of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) about working efficiently to improve the conditions. The corporation spends about 60 per cent of the revenue on sanitation related works, as per the municipal officials. The door to door service is not regular in some wards but it appears that the situation has gotten worse in the past few months. Earlier, heaps of garbage were usually found on vacant land or remote areas but now they can be easily observed near main roads and residential colonies. According to locals, they are bound to dump garbage in the open when the garbage collection vehicles fail to pick up garbage on a regular basis. “Earlier, I used to collect garbage from home when garbage vehicles failed to arrive for a couple of days and dump it into a garbage bin placed near Balbir Road on my way to work. Now the corporation has removed garbage bins from several locations but the door to door service is still irregular. We cannot keep the garbage stored in our house for several days,” a Dalanwala resident Gulab Singh said. The chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that the corporation is also receiving complaints and acting accordingly. He said that the corporation has been deducting about 40 per cent payment of the agency responsible for providing door to door garbage collection services in all wards every month. He said that though the corporation takes action against such irregularities, locals should also complain about it to the MCD. It will help in taking stringent action against officials and agencies concerned, he added.
