Christmas and New Year celebrations in cafés & themed cakes rise in popularity

Tuesday, 26 December 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

With less than a week remaining for New Year celebrations accompanied by the Christmas festivities, the bakeries in Dehradun are brimming with themed cakes and decorations. Several bakery owners have expressed that over time, there has been a rising trend of people choosing to celebrate Christmas and the New Year in cafes, resulting in a higher demand for occasion-themed cakes. In order to meet this demand and attract customers, bakeries and cafes alike are preparing cakes and decorations according to the theme of New Year.

Christmas on Monday saw many people celebrating the occasion in malls and cafes. Preparations are also underway to celebrate the New Year in various locations. Bakery owner Darshan Arora said that he has been operating a bakery and cafe for over two years. Over time, he has noticed an increase in the demand for themed cakes during the Christmas and New Year week. To cater to this demand, his bakery is adorned with decorations that reflect the themes of these occasions, while also offering cakes in colours associated with Christmas and New Year to attract customers, he said.

Another cafe and bakery owner Kavita Dangwal said, “The new trend indicates a shift in people’s preferences as they are now more inclined to celebrate Christmas and New Year at cafes and bakeries instead of their homes. As a result, I ensure that my cafe is attractively decorated and I create cakes in accordance with the Christmas and New Year themes in order to draw in more customers. Further, it has been observed that individuals from different religious backgrounds also visit cafes on Christmas and engage in gift exchanges.”

“I, along with my friends, visit cafes to celebrate Christmas, extending the festivities until the arrival of the new year. Further, we have recently begun organising parties at cafes, commencing from Christmas eve and lasting until New Year’s day. Although Christmas is traditionally regarded as a Christian holiday, it encourages individuals to revel in the festivities and momentarily escape the pressures of everyday life. Additionally, during the week of New Year’s, we select items such as food, clothing and various other necessities in accordance with the colours associated with Christmas and the New Year,” said Pooja Jain, a customer visiting a cafe.
