Char Dham police control room counters misinformation, addresses pilgrims’ queries

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The police control room set up for Char Dham Yatra 2025 in Dehradun has been playing a crucial role in disbursing fake information and addressing pilgrims’ queries. Several fake reports were floating online regarding Char Dham Yatra in the past one week during the India-Pakistan conflict including Char Dham registration and helicopter services which were efficiently addressed by the control room.

A false report claiming the suspension of helicopter services for the Yatra on May 10 due to escalating tensions between the two countries went viral on social media. The misinformation triggered panic among pilgrims across the country, particularly in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The inspector general of police, Garhwal range, Rajeev Swaroop said that the control room received nearly 100 calls within two to three hours from anxious pilgrims, mostly from Andhra Pradesh after the fake news went viral. Many had already booked trains, buses and helicopter services for the pilgrimage and were concerned about potential cancellations. In response, the police set up a dedicated WhatsApp group to communicate directly with the affected pilgrims. Many were also questioning whether the government had halted the Char Dham Yatra and its registration due to the India Pakistan conflict.

The police shared accurate updates and reassured pilgrims that all services were operational. Swaroop also recorded a personal message which was circulated on various platforms and asked the pilgrims on the WhatsApp group and others to forward the message further to help counter the misinformation. He said that the proactive measures helped restore confidence among the pilgrims. “There was a sense of panic initially but once they received verified information from us, the situation eased. Many pilgrims planning the Yatra were able to proceed without worry,” Swaroop said. Since the Yatra began on April 30, the control room has received over 600 complaints and queries. Around 250 were logged directly at the Char Dham control room, while more than 300 came through the Dial 112 emergency line.

The IG said that the control room tracks and monitors all complaints until resolution. While some calls are termed as emergencies like scam in heliservices, accidents or health issues and lost companions in crowds and during trekking, others include traffic jams, parking problems or hotel-related concerns. Officials promptly route non-emergency issues to respective district authorities while prioritising urgent cases.

This is the first time a dedicated control room was set up for Char Dham Yatra which has been playing a vital role in maintaining smooth operations and safety during the Yatra. Its quick action in busting fake information and addressing public inquiries has shown the significance of efficient communication during sensitive times, the IG added.
