Disaster- affected people of Joshimath stage sit-in protest

They insist on immediate State govt’s action on their demands

The land subsidence affected people of Joshimath staged a one-day sit-in demonstration under the banner of Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti on Monday in the tehsil premises in Joshimath to draw the State government’s attention to their 11-point charter of demands.

People, found sitting in the demonstration, claimed that despite two months having passed since the chief minister’s assurance to address their 11-point demand, nothing has happened on the ground and their plight has remained the same.

They said that on April 8, the CM    had agreed to address their problems on the basis of the charter of demands during his meeting with the delegation of the Sangharsh Samiti. “The CM gave the assurance three months after the movement was launched by the land subsidence affected people of Joshimath under the banner of Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti. But the State government has been sitting on the matter since then and this is what has forced us to come to Dehradun to stage the one-day sit-in demonstration,” said one of the agitators.

The agitators demanded the State government to act immediately to meet their 11-point demands. They also served a memorandum to the CM through the office of the additional district magistrate of Dehradun in which they demanded the entire Joshimath area be declared as disaster-affected. They also insisted that the State government must provide adequate compensation to the section of the people affected by the land subsidence problem. They further demanded the State government to make public the survey report prepared by eight top organizations of the country on the land sinking issue facing Joshimath. Also, they demanded a proper land settlement so that the landless people who are now living on government-owned lands are allowed to stay on by having these lands registered in their names. Another demand is payment of compensation to those whose lands were taken over by the army. Furthermore, the agitators demanded permanent ban on the Tapovan Vishnuprayag project and Helang Marwari bypass project.
