Sunday, 18 February 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Congress party leaders and workers held a protest at the Income Tax office here on Saturday against the decision to freeze the bank account of the party. The protest was held in response to the call made by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to hold protests at the IT offices in all parts of the country.

The Congress workers assembled at the state headquarters of the party on the day and started a march to the IT office. However the protestors were stopped by the Police near the Police headquarters. The Congress workers raised slogans against the decision of the IT department. Led by former chief minister Harish Rawat and Mahanagar president Jaswinder Singh Gogi the Congress workers torched an effigy of the government to flames. They submitted a memorandum directed to the President of India to the SDM.

Speaking on the occasion, former CM Rawat said that the decision to freeze bank accounts just ahead of the election shows that the BJP wants to destroy the parliamentary democracy in the country. He said that if some investigation was needed then the department should at least have waited for the elections to complete. Rawat asked, now if the party is prevented from legal operation of its accounts then how it will be able participate in the elections? He averred that the BJP is taking the country forward on the path of dictatorship.

The Mahanagar president Gogi said that the IT department has slapped a recovery of Rs 210 crore on Youth Congress and Congress party on the insistence of the ruling BJP. He said that on one hand the BJP has amassed huge wealth by the means of the electoral bonds which have been declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court (SC) and on the other it has frozen the bank accounts of Congress party where the money by means of crowdfunding was deposited.

Gogi said that the Congress workers will not sit idle on such measures of the government.

The general secretary Mahendra Singh Negi, Garima Dasauni, Abhinav Thapar and others attended the protest.

PNS/ DEHRADUN:  The workers of National Students Union of India (NSUI) clashed with the police personnel when they were prevented from marching towards the State BJP office on Saturday.
