The recruitment of Agniveers in the armed forces of the country is becoming an issue of tussle between the ruling BJP and Congress in Uttarakhand. The State unit of the party has taken a strong exception to BJP’s allegation that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is trying to mislead the youngsters of the State on Agniveer recruitment.

In a press conference held at Congress Bhawan on Monday the former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ganesh Godiyal challenged the BJP leadership to list only one benefit of Agnipath scheme. He said that the scheme would render the Agniveer unemployed after a period of four years. “What will these unemployed Agniveers do? The BJP wants them to become guards or join some private army,’’ he said. The Congress leader said that the mere talk of the Padyatra of the State Congress on the issue has made the BJP desperate. He said that the former president of Congress party, Rahul Gandhi understands the implication of Agnipath scheme so he has empathy for the youngsters of the State who work hard to join armed forces of the country. Godiyal said that the Congress party has made it clear that it would repeal the Agnipath scheme and restore the old system of recruitment in the armed forces if elected to office.  Former PCC president Pritam Singh, chief spokesperson of the party Garima Dasauni and others accompanied Godiyal.
