The Uttarakhand Congress has taken a strong exception to the comment of former chief minister and BJP leader Trivendra Singh Rawat in which he reportedly referred to Nathuram Godse- the person who killed MK Gandhi-as a patriot. Terming the statement as an example of the deranged mentality of a BJP leader, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara said BJP leaders have been insulting the ‘Father of the Nation’ MK Gandhi from time to time. He said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also denigrated Gandhi by calling him a clever tradesman.

“Now former CM Trivendra Singh Rawat has crossed all limits of appeasement by calling Gandhi’s killer a patriot. It would be no exaggeration if BJP leaders start demanding Bharat Ratna for Godse,’’ he said. Launching into an attack on the BJP, Mahara said that when the entire country was engaged in freedom struggle, the organisations which the BJP is affiliated to were working as informers of the British to send the patriots to jail. Today when BJP is sitting in power the same patriots are being branded as traitors, murderers and informers. He said that the British gave the mantra of divide and rule to their sympathisers when they left India.
