In an effort to prevent accidents due to overspeeding on Char Dham routes, the Transport department will keep an eye on violations on such routes through special bike squads. The department has identified seven vulnerable spots on Char Dham routes where pilgrims and tourists often crash their vehicles due to negligence of rules, the nodal officer of Char Dham Yatra Sunil Sharma said. He stated that hundreds of people belonging to plain areas drive on Char Dham routes on a daily basis once the Yatra starts. It has been observed statistically that most of the accidents that occurred on the identified spots on Char Dham routes involved drivers belonging to plain areas who often lack experience in driving on roads in mountainous areas. “Many people from states like Haryana and others drive wildly on Char Dham routes without considering traffic rules. Since they believe that authorities cannot be present on every second turn on roads in mountainous areas, they tend to drive as they wish without considering their and others’ safety. They indulge in overspeeding and overtake the other vehicle irrespective of the width of the road on Char Dham routes in mountainous areas. They flout rules as they fear no consequences. Considering this, the department has decided to deploy bike squads at seven vulnerable spots on Char Dham routes,” Sharma said. He added that the enforcement teams will ensure the deployment of the squads on the spots to act against those flouting norms once the Char Dham Yatra starts.
