Absconding PWD staff arrested for alleged embezzlement

The Pauri district police arrested a junior assistant of the Public Works Department who was absconding in connection with embezzlement of Rs 32 lakh. The accused had been absconding for long before his arrest on the weekend. Prior to this, the police had arrested an accountant of the Municipal Corporation of Kotdwar in an embezzlement case.

According to the police, PWD Lansdowne provincial division executive engineer Prem Singh Bisht had lodged an FIR in Lansdowne police station in August last year stating that the junior assistant Parmendra Singh had embezzled Rs 31,75,096 government money. The police registered a case and handed over the investigation to senior sub inspector Riyaz Ahmed. During the investigation, it came to light that the accused had transferred the money of 10 per cent of registered contractors into the accounts of his relative. More sections were added to the case by the police. Due to the increase in the penal sections the investigation of the case was transferred to deputy superintendent of police Vivah Sani. The accused was arrested by the police from the Gandhi Chowk in Lansdowne on Saturday.
