The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh on Clement Town Cantonment Board on Thursday for illegally dumping garbage in its garbage transfer station at Kargi Chowk last week.

As per the notice issued by the chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna on Thursday,  the corporation had seized two vehicles of the Ministry of Defence belonging to the cantonment board that were caught illegally dumping garbage at the MCD’s garbage transfer station on September 22.

The municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal had issued an order on July 13 according to which, the board was not allowed to dump its garbage in the MCD’s garbage transfer station for its disposal in the solid waste management and recycling plant in Sheeshambada from August 1. Despite this, the corporation caught two vehicles of the board illegally dumping garbage in the transfer station. The notice stated that the corporation had sent a notice to the cantonment board on September 24 to give its clarification on the matter without any delay but the board failed to respond in time.

Considering this, the MCD has imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on each seized vehicle of the board and has stated in the notice to submit the amount of penalty within one week. The notice stated that required action will be taken against the board if it fails to submit the penalty in due time. The MCD will file an FIR under relevant sections of IPC if the board is found to be dumping the garbage illegally again, as per the notice.
