Will act under NSA against those disrupting harmony, law & order: SSP

In view of the proposed Mahapanchayat by Muslims in Dehradun on June 18, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar said that the police will act under the National Security Act (NSA) if harmony, law and order are disrupted in the city. An organisation of the minority community has announced to conduct a Mahapanchayat on June 18 after the announcement of a Mahapanchayat planned by various groups in Uttarkashi’s Purola.

Javed Khan from Muslim Sewa Sangathan in Dehradun said that their organisation has planned to conduct a Mahapanchayat on June 18 to address two current prominent issues of the State- love Jihad and people harassing and vandalising innocent people of their community in the name of love Jihad. He said that several representatives of the minority community are expected to participate in the Mahapanchayat in which they will talk about inappropriate acts carried out by some men of their community against young girls and women. “We will raise awareness and talk about how some men involved in such activities are doing things which are immoral and not acceptable in our society. We will tell them our religion does not support such acts,” said Khan. He said that their second issue will be how innocent people are being allegedly harassed and their shops are being vandalised in the name of love Jihad. He said that some people are currently exploiting the sensitive situation and harassing innocent people of a minority community and police should act against such offenders. Such people are enemies of the society and police must identify them and act against them accordingly, added Khan.

Meanwhile, the SSP said that a similar Mahapanchayat was also proposed to be organised in the Bhaniyawala area on Monday but the police officials talked to the organisers after which they cancelled it. He said that the police will also talk to the people of the organisation planning to conduct Mahapanchayat on June 18. He said that if the Mahapanchayat is conducted as planned, the police will stay alert and act strictly against those who try to disturb law and order. He said that the police will act against organisers and chief representatives in the event under NSA if they are found to be disrupting harmony among communities, besides disturbing law and order. “We will take all measures to ensure peace, law and order is maintained across the district,” added SSP. It is pertinent to mention here that NSA empowers the police to detain a person without a formal charge and without trial.
