The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) has set the target to sterilise and vaccinate 500 street dogs every month to minimise issues resulting from them in the city. The corporation has also selected an organisation via the tender process to operate the newly built Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre to achieve this target, said the Haridwar municipal commissioner Dayanand Saraswati. He said that an ABC centre has been constructed in the city to control the population of street dogs.

The centre was inaugurated by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami who also flagged off a dog catcher vehicle. He said that the organisation selected by MCH is registered as per the rules. He said that a team of 10 people and two veterinarians will carry out the work in the ABC centre to ensure all dogs are treated well and get all necessary facilities like sterilisation surgery and anti-rabies vaccination after which they will be released in their respective areas. There are nearly 6,000 street dogs in the city and MCH has set the target to sterilise and vaccinate at least 500 dogs every month in a phased manner, added Saraswati. He said that they are optimistic this initiative will be effective in bringing down the population of street dogs in the city. He also appealed to local citizens to cooperate with the MCH officials in this initiative.
