Considering the approaching monsoon season, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will set up a disaster control room on its premises within a week to tackle waterlogging issues in the city. Waterlogging is one of the major issues in Dehradun every year with overflowing drains and flooded roads a common sight in various locations during the monsoon.

To ensure the locals can easily approach the corporation with any waterlogging related issues during the monsoon, the control room will be set up before June 20, said the municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal. He told this correspondent that the monsoon is expected to arrive in Uttarakhand by June 25 and the MCD will finish all preparations for it before the said time. He said that the local residents can complain anytime in the control room as the MCD’s team will be available to tackle the issues round the clock.

The corporation will also deploy nodal officers to monitor the work in the control room on a daily basis. The corporation has also started cleaning all major drains to minimise the risk of waterlogging. The chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna said that there are 56 main drains in the city which are cleaned by MCD every year. “Out of these 56 drains, 36 have already been cleaned and all the remaining drains will be cleaned before the onset of monsoon,” he added. He also informed that the corporation has given the responsibility to clean five drains to the Irrigation department and has allocated about Rs 25 lakh for the same.

These drains usually pose a serious challenge to the corporation every year during monsoon considering which the MCD has asked the Irrigation department to ensure their thorough cleaning to minimise the risk of waterlogging in surrounding areas, added Khanna.
