In latest news from Uttarakhand, with the 121st Shri Ma Nanda Devi Mahotsav continuing under the auspices of Ram Sevak Sabha in Nainital town, eco-friendly idols of the Mother Nanda and Sunanada were carved out of banana trees with the assistance of some traditional folk artists and experts. Then these were installed in the Ma Nayana Devi temple. On the occasion of Nandashtami, the idols were consecrated at an auspicious time and then kept for the devotees to pay obeisance to. The artisans, engaged in making the idols, claimed that the paints and the materials used in the idol-making process were eco-friendly. They informed that parts of bamboo plants, crown flowers and clothes were used and so, when the idols are immersed in the lake with the end of the festival it will have no adverse effect on the lake’s water.   As part of the Mahotsav, quiz and folk song competitions were organized involving school students. The local MLA Sarita Arya awarded the winners. Awareness campaigns are also being organised to sensitise the people about the slew of welfare schemes being rolled out by the governments.
