Kickboxing has become popular among the girls in the State in recent years, said the Uttarakhand Amateur Kickboxing Association (UAKA) president Arvind Kumar Kotnala. Several parents said that kickboxing is a good workout option for children as compared to going to the gym. Apart from this, kickboxing is a good tool for self-defence for girls, the parents said.

Talking to The Pioneer, Kotnala said, “Kickboxing is different from boxing. Boxing is only about punching, striking and defence, whereas in kickboxing the players use their legs for kicking. I have personally seen that the craze for kickboxing among girls has increased by an average of 50 per cent in the State. Apart from this, the parents of the girls seem to be more active in sending them for kickboxing. I would urge the other parents to send their girls more for kickboxing as it is the best tool for self-defence.”

A parent Neena Gupta said, “I am the mother of 15-year- old girl and I believe that every girl should know the self-defence techniques for her safety. I send my daughter to kickboxing classes so that she knows self defence. I would request all the parents to send their girls for kickboxing to boost their immunity and make them strong to face any challenge.”

Commenting on kickboxing as a tool for self-defence, Shweta Arora said, “I have been in the field of kickboxing for many years. As we know nowadays girls can get groped on the road in some places. This is what encourages me to be a part of kickboxing. With this, I know how to kick the offender.  Kickboxing is a martial art which trains the girls to be safe from such threats.”
