HC  sends notice on security provided to ‘Champion’

Thursday, 28 SEPTEMBER 2023 | PNS | NAINITAL

Taking cognizance of the public interest litigation (PIL) filed on the former Khanpur MLA Kunwar Pranav Singh ‘Champion’ and his family members being provided with five security guards, including gunner and the facility of using his own car as hooter, the division bench of the Chief Justice Vipin Sandhi and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal issued notice to the State home secretary, DGP, IG (security), SSP Haridwar, district magistrate Haridwar and the former MLA Khanpur and members of his family, ordering them to file replies within four weeks. The next hearing has been fixed by court at December 8.  Notably, the PIL was filed by a Haridwar resident Imran. He said in his PIL that the security facility being provided to the former MLA is unwarranted as there is no threat perception involving him.  Importantly, the Supreme Court way back in 2016 had asked then State government to form a committee to determine who were to be provided with the State security.  However, the State government keeps sitting on it and continues to provide as many as 610 gunners to 197 VIPs on the basis of individual applications.
