Lower cost & environment-friendly factors boost CNG popularity in Doon

Various factors like affordability and environmental friendliness are encouraging more people to shift towards the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for their four-wheelers in Dehradun. Many people in the city opine that CNG serves as a preferable alternative to petrol and diesel. As a result of its advantages, people are increasingly transitioning to CNG vehicles. Experts emphasised that utilising CNG vehicles can alleviate pollution and mitigate other detrimental impacts.

To ensure the preservation of the environment and to counteract harmful airborne substances, people are encouraged to choose CNG vehicles over petrol or diesel counterparts, said the secretary of the Society of Pollution and Environmental Conservation Scientists (SPECS) Brij Mohan Sharma.

A petrol pump employee Vivek Sharma told this correspondent that the demand for CNG has grown in the city over time. Initially, there were limited petrol pumps in the city that offered CNG. However, in response to the demand for CNG, the government has established numerous petrol pumps where individuals can get CNG for their vehicles, he said.

Further, a local citizen Anand Tandon said, “Fuel prices are being hiked frequently. I cannot afford to purchase an electric vehicle at present. So I am compelled to explore the option of switching to CNG. Not only is CNG more cost-effective, but it is also more environment-friendly in comparison to petrol and diesel. However, a significant concern arises from the scarcity of CNG filling stations within the city. Considering the demand, I hope that the government takes measures to increase the number of CNG filling stations in the city.”

“The general public’s preference towards CNG has notably increased in contrast to petrol and diesel. CNG emerges as a significantly superior alternative for individuals today, primarily due to its minimal smoke emissions and lack of poisonous gases. Additionally, CNG contains approximately 45 per cent fewer hydrocarbons, thus safeguarding human health against various environmental ailments,” said Sharma. He further said that CNG significantly reduces harmful vehicular exhaust gas emissions like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other suspended particles. So, people must opt for CNG as it is considered a better option than petrol and diesel, he added.
