The Nainital district administration will give Rs 10 to consumers who bring empty liquor bottles to waste collection centres. This measure is being taken to minimise the dumping of empty liquor bottles in public places which becomes a major issue in Nainital during peak tourist season. The administration will initially execute this plan in Nainital city and then implement it across the district depending on the response received in the first phase. The Nainital district magistrate Dhiraaj Garbyal on Tuesday held a meeting with respective officials to discuss waste management. It was decided in the meeting that the administration would pay Rs 10 to consumers or any person who gives an empty liquor bottle to collection centres. The DM also directed the Excise department on Tuesday to maintain the data of liquor bottles sold in Nainital daily in order to track what is being done with the empty bottles. He also directed officials to ensure the installation of QR codes on liquor bottles sold across the city to ensure they can be tracked easily.

Talking about this initiative, the DM said that unattended empty bottles accumulated on roads or lying on streets will not cause injury to animals and humans. He also directed the officials to ensure the setting up of the Waste Material Garbage Collection Centre at the places where tourists visit to make the collection of recyclable waste material easy.
