More than two dozen vehicles impounded as part of one-hour ‘Morning Storm’

The Traffic police on Monday impounded two-wheelers of 27 minor students riding to school in the morning as part of their Operation Morning Storm campaign to act against traffic violations committed by minors. The police also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on each vehicle. The superintendent of police (Traffic) Akshay Konde said that the campaign was started after the authorities observed a considerable increase in traffic violations by underage riders in Dehradun city, especially in the morning and afternoon. He said that the police had distributed pamphlets and put up flyers outside almost every school in the city area to sensitise students and their parents about the rules for minors under the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act.  He said that under section 199A of the MV Act, the guardian of the child or owner of the motor vehicle operated by the minor, can be imprisoned for up to three years and penalised with a fine of Rs 25,000. He said that if found guilty, the minor would not be able to get a driving license before the age of 25 years under this act.

To ensure rules are being followed, the traffic police conducted a checking campaign on Monday morning in which many were found to be violating the rules and the police took action against them, said Konde. The police imposed penalties on a total of 80 people on Monday including 27 underage students. The police took action against 53 people under relevant sections of the MV act and imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 on 27 students besides impounding their vehicles as per the rules too, stated the SP. He said, “Our campaign is getting support in the city. Many school administrators themselves have appealed to us to take action in their respective school areas. Our campaign on Monday morning lasted for only one hour but it was quite successful. Traffic police team will continue to conduct such inspections to ensure minors follow traffic rules.”
