World Congress on Disaster Management concludes in Doon

Governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh said that the knowledge exchanged during the sixth World Congress on Disaster Management will certainly benefit the nations facing disaster scenarios. He said this while speaking at the conclusion of the event here on Friday. He said that all nations of the world will benefit from the deliberations of more than 70 experts and scientists from across the globe on mitigating disasters.

“The gist of these deliberations will reach all the nations and enable them to become more capable of dealing with various types of disasters. Various natural disasters are faced across the world from time to time. Uttarkahand has also suffered such disasters and these present a major challenge but we must accept them as warnings and adopt necessary precautions. Major disasters in Uttarakhand and Kedarnath during 2012 and 2013 respectively had caused considerable damage while other incidents also posed challenges for us. We must be prepared to face such challenges,” he said.

The governor appreciated work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that he had acted swiftly in case of disasters which enabled the authorities to minimise the problems of the victims. He recalled how collaborated and swift response by the Central and State governments ensured the rescue of 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi after 17 days.

Lieutenant governor of Andaman and Nicobar, admiral (retd) DK Joshi said that the delibrations held between experts in the event were successful, adding that it is not possible to lessen disasters but the resulting damage can be mitigated with proper preparation and that disasters can be checked from spreading further.

Union Earth Sciences minister Kiren Rijiju said that it is due to the efforts of the Central government that the damage will be comparatively less in case of an earthquake or another type of disaster. This is because the government has moved forward in this direction and done protective works, he said.
