Garhwal commissioner orders DMs to act against companies failing to dispose of plastic packaging

The Garhwal commissioner Sushil Kumar has issued an order to district magistrates of Garhwal division to take action against the manufacturers, importers and company owners who fail to collect and dispose of the plastic used in the packaging of their products sold in the respective districts as per court orders. He also issued instructions to build a solid waste management plan for each village in rural areas for proper garbage disposal.

The commissioner held a review meeting of the works being done under plastic ban of the State under municipal bodies and district administrations and gave necessary directions to the officials. He directed the DMs to hold a coordination meeting with various departments including district administrations, Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB), State Tax Collection, industry centres and others along with manufacturers, importers and company owners in their respective area to dispose of the plastic used their along with their products. He asked the DMs to direct such commercial bodies to collect and dispose of the plastic garbage generated due to the plastic used in the packaging of their products. He directed them to take strict action against such bodies if they fail to comply with the rules as per the court’s order.

The commissioner has asked the DMs to hold a meeting with the industrial institutions located in their area and get information about their plan for collecting the plastic used in their products’ packaging. He directed to send notices to those institutions that fail to provide the said plan. He instructed the officials to take all preventive measures to prevent use, storage and transportation of single-use plastic and banned plastic items and take action against people found to be involved in their illegal storage and supply. He instructed the DMs to collect information about the quantity of garbage collected in urban areas, rural areas, Panchayats and forest areas and make necessary arrangements for their segregation accordingly. All measures must be taken by the bodies concerned to prevent the usage of banned plastic products and ensure proper disposal of waste in their respective areas, added Kumar.
