In latest Uttarakhand news, with the steady rise in mercury, the demand for power is also rising. And this is compounding challenges for the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL). Things have come to such a pass that UPCL is being forced to buy 50 to 60 lakh units of electricity from the markets. Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar, particularly the rural areas of these districts, experienced power outages for one to two hours for two consecutive days in this sweltering heat. UPCL officials said that there is a stiff rise of 10 lakh units in the demand of power in the State over the last 24 hours. They said they are anticipating more rise in power demand in the coming days. They added that just four crore 70 lakh units of power are now available with them. They, however, sounded confident that by purchasing power from the open markets on short term tenders, they can cover the demand-supply hiatus.
