U’khand to implement Uniform Civil Code soon: CM

Saturday, 01 July 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said that the expert committee set to prepare a draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has completed its work and UCC would be implemented in Uttarakhand soon. The CM took to Twitter to make this announcement on Friday.

Earlier in the day Dhami told media persons in Dehradun that the government would soon get the draft of the UCC prepared by the expert committee. He said that the government would study the draft submitted by the expert committee and take further action accordingly.

The UCC has become a subject of national debate after Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly advocated for it on June 27. The national law commission has also initiated the process on the UCC in the country and the exhaustive draft of the UCC prepared by the expert committee set up by Uttarakhand could provide vital clues and directions in this endeavour.

It is pertinent to mention here that in the run up for the assembly elections of 2022 the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had promised that the BJP government would bring UCC in the state. Accordingly an expert committee headed by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai was set up on May 27, 2022. Justice (Rtd) Pramod Kohli, social worker Manu Gaur, former chief secretary of Uttarakhand Shatrughan Singh and Vice Chancellor (VC) of Doon University Surekha Dangwal are the members of the expert committee. The committee was mandated to examine all existing and relevant laws regarding marriage, divorce, right for property, inheritance, adoption and protection for implementation of UCC in the state.
