Expert team begins land subsidence survey in Joshimath

The high level committee formed by the State government to check the land subsidence in Joshimath area arrived here and surveyed various areas on Wednesday. The team of scientists first visited the Marwadi-Vishnuprayag area to inspect the area being eroded by the Alaknanda river after which it surveyed Gandhinagar and other localities. The team will also visit the Auli and Sunil areas to check for land subsidence. The committee headed by the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) executive director Piyoosh Rautela will conduct a geological and geotechnical survey of the land subsidence affected areas in Joshimath for a duration of three days. Speaking about the visits made by the team on Wednesday, Rautela said that the team started inspecting the affected areas from the Marwadi-Vishnuprayag area. The Alaknanda river has caused considerable erosion and the level of water in the river is also considerably high. Referring to the Joshimath city, he said that considerable construction activities are being undertaken in the urban area while proper arrangement for drainage of water has not been made. Cracks were also witnessed in the nearby areas. The team will conduct its survey for the next three days and prepare its report to be submitted to the State administration.
