Transport department to act against increasing accidents caused by overspeeding

In view of the increasing accident cases due to overspeeding, the Transport department is planning to deploy bike squads with speed radar guns along with introducing traffic calming measures on various junctions of Dehradun.

The department will also place rumble strips on various routes as an effective measure to reduce road accidents, said Shailesh Tiwari, the regional transport officer (enforcement) of the Dehradun division. He said that maximum road accidents are occurring due to overspeeding and the department is taking all possible measures to bring down the numbers. He said that on Friday, the enforcement teams of RTO challaned operators of 58 vehicles for traffic violations on various routes of the Dehradun district as part of its checking campaign. The teams also challaned operators of 24 vehicles for overspeeding on various routes of the Dehradun district as part of its checking campaign.

Besides this, the teams also imposed penalties on 17 riders of two-wheeler vehicles for not wearing helmets, said Tiwari. He said that the department has deployed two enforcement teams and four bike squads to act against overspeeding in the Dehradun district. He said that in the last financial year, the RTO took action against 5,263 people for overspeeding. “We will continue taking such actions in future too. We have also made some plans to prevent accidents caused due to overspeeding which will be executed soon,” added Tiwari.
