Congress protest against LPG hike

Friday, 03 March 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Uttarakhand Congress took  out a rally in Dehradun on Thursday, protesting against inflation, particularly the spiraling prices of LPG cylinders. Later, the party activists burnt the Centre in effigy.

Addressing the gathering, Congress leader   Jaswinder Singh Gogi said that the people’s grievances are increasing as the prices of essential commodities and those of cooking gas in particular keep spiraling with the Centre caring nothing for the suffering common people. “In this situation, the Congress cannot sit idle. We will continue staging protest rallies everywhere. We will protest in the parliament, in the State Assemblies and also on roads,” he said.

He further said that during the Congress tenure till 2014 at the Centre, inflation had been kept in check in the interests of the common people. “The prices of the articles the poor consume were kept under control,” he said.

Ridiculing the BJP, he said that at that time, the saffron party used to stage cheap drama whenever prices were a little increased. “But now they are indifferent to the people’s suffering.”

Speaking of the hike in the prices of domestic and commercial LPG cylinders, the Congress leader said that the price of gas cylinder in Uttarakhand had risen from Rs 1072 to Rs 1122. “The price of cooking gas cylinder has been hiked by Rs 50 in Uttarakhand and that of the commercial cylinders has been hiked by a staggering Rs 350. Between April 2017 and July 2022, the prices of the LPG cylinders have been hiked as many as 58 times. Instead of heeding to the people’s incessant suffering, the BJP-led Centre has been indulging in vindictive politics, targeting the Opposition leaders by conjuring up scams,” the Congress leader said.

Several other party leaders, including Godavari Thapli, Puran Singh Rawat, Urmila Thapa and Garima Dasauni,  participated in the rally.
