The Horticulture Department in Bageshwar has started mulching in order to provide better growing condition for the vegetables. Mulching is a process of covering the soil by a protective layer of old leaves, straw, compost or paper to maintain its temperature, suppress weeds and retain moisture to improve the growing condition for the vegetables. This technique is being adopted in the Kanda tehsil of the district which would increase the income of the farmers by two folds.

It is significant for agricuture as it will save water up to 85 percent and the holes made for irrigation help in doing so. Not only will it help in preventing the problem caused by worms but also it will prevent the vegetables like tomatoes from getting rotten. With the help of the initiative- Udyan Sachal Dal Kendra Kanda, the department is leading the way for the farmers towards new techniques of farming by using the mulching for vegetable produce and providing them equipment for it in subsidy.

Horticulture assistant, Devendra Rawat informed that the mulching will increase the production of vegetables like cabbage, tomato, brinjal, potato and capsicum. The farmers of Kamsyarghati Rawatsera will also adopt this technique. The economy of the tenants will boost and that too with less effort. The farmers who were faced with the problems of frost, weeds will worry less as this method will protect their produce from getting damaged.
