Safety issue dominates election campaigning in DAV College

With the students’ union election approaching, the students of DAV PG College-one of the oldest colleges in the city- are stressing that the student council to be formed after the election must address issues like their safety through prompt repairing of the college building.  The issue of safety of the students in the college premises has come to dominate the campaign of the election after the death of a young woman with a part of the college’s boundary wall collapsing on her in October.  The students this correspondent talked to said in unison that the students’ representative body to be elected through the election must take up this issue with the college management.  Besides, they are demanding free WiFi facility in the college premises to enhance the learning process.

Commenting on the students’ expectations from the upcoming student council in the college, a student Vikas Bisht said that aside from putting a premium on the students’ safety, they must ensure that the medical room in the college has adequate stock of emergency medicines.  “Safety is, however, of paramount importance to us. Several parts of the college building are crumbling, being unattended for years. We are particularly worried with the dilapidated condition of the drawing and law buildings. These must be repaired promptly to stop the recurrence of the tragedy that happened last month,” he added.

Asked to speak on the same matter, another student Manisha Hatwal raised the issue of the dearth of sanitary napkins for the girls at the college’s medical room. “We expect the council to be formed after the election to address this matter seriously,” she said. She also pitched for free Wi-Fi service to be facilitated to the students. “This will certainly enhance students’ learning experiences,” she added.

A few students were, however, found to be indifferent to the election. While talking to The Pioneer on the election, they said that they had little expectations from the council to be formed through the election. “Frankly, I have no expectations. The sooner it is over the better for us,” a student said, requesting anonymity.

Another student Prakshit Bhandari said that he is least interested in the high-pitched campaigning now going on in the college premises. “I believe that this electioneering disrupts our studies. However, being students, we cannot help participating in it. I would just appeal that whoever is elected must address the students’ grievances, ensure their safety and enhance learning facilities,” he added.
