The regional transport office (RTO) of Dehradun has directed the assistant regional transport officers (ARTOs) of the district to take action against the selling of new vehicles and their operation on streets without valid registration with the transport department. The officials informed that many locals who buy new vehicles start using their vehicles on the roads without any registration with the department which is against the rules.

As per the provisions under the new Motor Vehicles Act, automobile dealers must also register the vehicles with the transport department and install the new number plate within seven days after selling vehicles to the customers, stated officials. The regional transport officer (enforcement) Sandeep Saini said the RTO has been receiving complaints for some time that many new vehicle owners are operating vehicles without any registration and number plate. Saini said that though it is an automobile dealer’s responsibility to handover the vehicle to the new owner after completing all the paperwork as per the rules, the new owner should also insist on taking possession of the vehicle only after the registration process is completed.

Saini said that he has directed all the assistant regional transport officers (ARTOs) of enforcement teams across the district to seize such vehicles that run without valid registration and number plates. Besides this, the RTO will also take action against the automobile dealers of such vehicles who handed over the vehicles to the owners against the rules, stated Saini.
